MONTREAL (CP) - BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica miraculously managed to escaped serious injury Sunday following a horrific crash on the 27th lap of the Canadian Grand Prix auto race.
Kubica looked to lose control after an apparent touch with Jarno Trulli's Toyota on a corner just ahead of the hairpin turn. The Polish driver went across the grass and hit a concrete wall head-on before the car bounced across the track and slid on its side to a stop.
Debris was strewn across the track as the safety car came out until the site was cleaned up.
Team officials said Kubica never lost consciousness and that he was talking shortly afterwards. The exact nature of Kubica's injuries haven't been divulged, but various reports suggested he had suffered either a broken right leg or broken ankle.
Medical personnel arrived on site moments after the crash and took Kubica from his car to the track medical facility. He was then transferred via helicopter to a Montreal hospital for further treatment.
Kubica, 22, replaced Jacques Villeneuve of Iberville, Que., on the Sauber team last August. He was in his 12th career Formula One race.
